Spring Break at Galloway

Following the two week period of Excursion where many students travel abroad or stay in Atlanta, students then have spring break, or more commonly called “spreak” on Instagram. This year, I decided to interview various students and see where the student body explored (or stayed in) this year!

Personally, I traveled to the UK, specifically to London and Edinburgh. It proved to be one of my favorite trips I’ve ever been on. I went sightseeing, saw the musical Six, visited the Churchill War Rooms, ate the famous Borough Market chocolate strawberries, and a lot more before taking a 4-hour train ride to Edinburgh. Scotland was amazing, and I definitely want to go back and explore the Highlands. My family and I partook in a four-hour tour of Edinburgh Castle, and then explored the city for the remaining days. While I missed tanning on the beaches as many others were doing, I loved learning about the deep history of  the UK and the lovely weather we were lucky to have.

Junior Kayden Winter and his sister, sophomore Ellie Winter, traveled to Hilton Head, where the weather was sunny and warm. Kayden reflects on how he got to bike around, eat at local restaurants, discover new music on the beach, and even saw dolphins in the ocean. Following his Independent Study where he spent time in cooler places and even in the snow, he was glad to spend time in the sun. Ellie shares how she played lots of guitar and enjoyed long walks in the sunny weather. She also enjoyed spending time with her brothers and her family.

Sophomore Wolf Mchezaji had a stay-cation! He relaxed at home after traveling to Spain for Excursion, claiming to have slept the entire break and wishing it was longer. He got to see friends who were on different excursions and catch up with them during spring break.

Senior Luke Sommerville went to the Bahamas for senior spring break, where they stayed at Baha-mar. The seniors participated in loads of activities such as playing at the Casino, going to the water park, beaches, and making life-long memories with one another. Luke reflected on the wide variety of foods (Asian, Italian, steak-houses, Mediterranean, etc) they were able to try in the Bahamas, stating the trip was an unforgettable experience.

Senior Thomas Whitmire went to Nevada and California, visiting Valley of Fire State Park and Death Valley National Park. While there, he hiked through canyons and salt flats, visited the lowest point in North America (Badwater Basin). He took many pictures of wildlife and scenic photos. While visiting, he was able to find coyotes and some bighorn sheep. He spent his last spring break memorably with his parents before going to college.

Junior Joaquín Mon spent his spring break in Italy, most of the trip in Rome, but taking one-day trips to the Vatican and Florence. He visited big sightseeing landmarks such as the Sistine Chapel, the David, and the Pantheon. He reflects on how it is a huge walking city and how it was difficult to travel by car because of the roads. He indulged in classic Italian dishes such as margarita pizzas, bolognese pastas, grilled octopus, and finished most of his dinners off with gelato.

Freshman Josh Rubenson spent his break in Deer Valley and Park City, skiing for most of the trip. He reflects on the poor conditions in the single black ski trails, stating that rocks and grass were visible on the ground. Josh says the best part of the trip wasn’t the skiing, but it was getting to spend time with his family and two family friends who came with them on the trip.
