A Mistake or a Blessing in Disguise? Independent Media and Its Surprising Sky Rocket to Fame in the Industry
In this day and age, there is a hard truth we have to face. Our world and the screens we look through to see it are doctored, filtered, and constantly surveyed to keep up a specific view that you or the company that owns the platforms wants you to see. An example of this is the Walt Disney Company which owns Hulu, 20th Century Fox, Pixar, National Geographic and ABC news. They filter all the things they don't want to see to fit their perspective and/or to get the most money out of it. It’s the same old cheap cash grabs produced and they're only getting worse.
But when all feels hopeless, there is a new hope coming upon the horizon line in the media wasteland. A wonderful example of this is Iron Lung which grossed over 50 million dollars worldwide with a budget of three to four million dollars! Shows like BFDI and Amazing Digital Circus getting episodes to have full theatrical releases! Seems to me that people love media other people pour their hearts into.
Isn't it so wild that humans like art made by humans? Crazy! Communities of artists band together to pour their hearts into their work. A show of unity to artists around the world. As many shows start to surface like Public Access Purgatory and Magical Meow Meow, there are studios there to back them up. Many say this rise to popularity is due to studios like A24 and GLITCH having major hits in theaters and online. But with all this expressional freedom there are going to be bad apples in the bunch. Many creators of such shows have been caught in controversy. The most prominent being the creator of the controversial and viral show Hasbin Hotel, Vivienne Medrano, who has been allegedly tied to serious accusations. This behaviour is a small but loud pattern with a few creators, but one bad apple shouldn’t rot a farm to ruin.
There are so many talented people in this industry that deserve as much attention as they can get, and there are wonderful creators and accounts like The Indie Spotlight and that gives these shows a platform to climb. To all artists thinking of starting a project, now is the best chance. Shoot your shot, write the script, create the characters, because with so many different humans on this planet there will be someone who wants to see your work.
