Excursion Recap Lead Like a Boss: Annabel Keaten and Reese Weinstein
An excursion is defined as a deviation from a regular path or pattern, and every late February, our school proves why that deviation is needed. For two weeks, classrooms are traded for real world experiences which can range from jogging the BeltLine to stepping foot inside the Coliseum. Each trip leads somewhere different and offers every student an unforgettable experience, but we often don’t hear those stories or multiples from every excursion. Until now, in this first fully collaborative article, students will share their individual experiences and reflect on what they have learned.
Lead Like a Boss: Annabel Keaten and Reese Weinstein
Annabel’s perspective of the Lead Like A Boss excursion, which explores the ins and outs of leadership, was that she appreciated the field trips that first-hand showcased live-action leadership. The excursion visited Mercedes-Benz Headquarters, Truist Park, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, City Hall, restaurants, and City Springs Theatre Company, where they all spoke to people in leadership roles about their responsibilities and leadership styles. Although she enjoyed learning about the inner workings of leadership, her main takeaway was seeing different career paths and what they entail. Careers like in a hospital, in a corporate business, and in the arts. She thinks, being in her sophomore year at Galloway, this was a beneficial experience especially when considering college options and what she may want to study.
Reese adds that the field trips she found most memorable were Truist Park, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Cooks & Soldiers (restaurant). At Truist Park they had a tour of the stadium where they saw places like the dug out, and the locker room. They saw the leadership it takes to get the stadium “game-day” ready. It takes a lot of managing others and figuring out the logistics to make sure everyone has an enjoyable experience. At Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta they met with the CEO, Donna Highland. They learned about how she worked her way up from being an accountant to being a CEO. At Cooks & Soldiers they met with the owner of the restaurant Federico Castellucci. He did not start out as being a successful business owner, in that case learning about the different leadership styles he approached to get to where he is was very interesting. Overall, she thinks that Lead Like A Boss was an extremely successful excursion that will benefit them in the future.
