Hail Mary: Galloway's Inaugural Flag Football Season

This fall, the members of Galloway’s first football completed their first season. The team began to form back in May of 2025, when the entire student body received an email where they could attend an interest meeting if they wished, and students were given basic information regarding the team. The school received positive feedback: “I’m happy Galloway finally let us have a shot at football,” says Matthew Edmonds, one of the current co-captains. Due to Galloway’s small size we aren’t able to form a “normal” tackle football team, but the second closest option is flag football. The team is composed of twenty-one student players led by captains Adam Berardi, Dylan Homer, and Matthew Edmonds. On August 20th they rallied together for their first-ever match, and the Scots bagged their first flag football victory.

Following the first game, highlights, reels, and photos were posted on the Galloway Athletics Instagram page. When asking players about their personal highlights, players were excited to share their achievements. Adam Berardi mentioned, “Catching my first touchdown of the season,” whereas Dylan Homer reflected on the team, “I liked the dedication and heart of this team.” Additionally, two freshmen players shared their experiences, Josh Rubensohn pulled two flags and Adam Granden stated he was happy to start as an underclassman. Calla Davies remarked, “It was good to play with the team for the first time and winning the game.” Their second game was August 26th against GAAA, and they brought home the win once again.

Don’t give up

The head coach is Clay Randel, who is notably known for his photography at the school, but his connections to flag football started at a very young age. This is his first time coaching, and while questioning the team,  all the feedback he received was positive. The assistant coach, Brett Curry is a Galloway parent and his knowledge on football is extensive despite never playing in a real game. Regarding the whereabouts, the team practices in our own backyard after school hours, the green, and games are held at various locations.

Despite being a new addition to Galloway, the flag football team was hard at work and had a successful season with a record of 2-5. Teammates are excited for the years to come and for their success to continue building. Don’t forget to congratulate your fall sport athletes in the hallways!
