“I Want Your Midnights”: Taylor Swift’s New Album

Taylor Swift has a reputation for not attending award shows, even when she is expected to win multiple awards. Just her presence at the Video Music Awards made fans excited, and for a good reason— she spontaneously announced the release of a new album. In a full circle moment, she went from having her thunder stolen by Kanye West in 2009, to announcing her tenth studio album at the same award show thirteen years later.

Taylor Swift’s new album was announced at the VMA’s during her acceptance speech for the Video of the Year Award. In her speech, she said that she “had, sort of, made up my mind that if you were gonna be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand new album comes out October 21st, and I will tell you more at midnight.” After two years of only re-released albums, “Red (Taylor’s Version)” and “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)”, Swift announced thirteen completely new songs, coming out this October. In the media announcement, it stated that the album would consist of “the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout [Taylor Swift’s] life,” and Swifties everywhere went wild. Babies crying, reaction videos posted; her fandom was in shambles with excitement. Soon after, theories started forming and easter eggs got cracked.

Since the artist announced her plans for re-recording her masters, her fans had been scouring her press releases and posts for clues, or “easter eggs.” Throughout her career, she’s been known to drop these hints for her fans to find. During an interview on “The Tonight Show,” she said, ”It’s sort of a tradition that we started a very long time ago. I think the first time that I started dropping sort of cryptic clues in my music was when I was 14 or 15, putting together my first album.” Taylor has no secrets about her love for the easter eggs, and the fans have fooled themselves into believing several quite ridiculous theories because of this. Many have speculated that “Midnights” is a sister album to “Lover” as the 2019 album by Swift was originally named “Daylight.” The fans have gotten so much to prophesize about with the new album, and Taylor Swift never stops dropping the easter eggs.

Throughout scandals and wild theories, Taylor Swift has never failed to come out on top. This new album may have come out of the left field, but there is no doubt that it will be breaking records.
