Dont Worry Darling: Drama and Review
The movie that has been circulating in millions of people's minds since last year just had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 5th, 2022. “Don’t Worry Darling” is a thriller directed by Olivia Wilde, that features famous actors like Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, and Chris Pine. The film released its teaser on September 13, 2021, and immediately gained popularity because of the actors, specifically, Harry Styles.
After the film began shooting, Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde began dating and have been for two years. This relationship was not taken well by the public, mainly because of the 10-year age gap and the jealousy coming from the Harry Styles fans. Although Styles and Wilde don't publicly talk about their relationship, they do show some PDA. They are often seen holding hands and sometimes caught kissing, meaning that they are definitely together. Though, on September 13, at the press conference for “DWD”, they sat on opposite sides of the panel and didn't make eye contact once. Even on the red carpet that night, they didn't show up together and took photos individually. Because they were avoiding each other, fans started speculating if they were still a thing. A couple of days later, a reporter hinted at a confirmation that Olivia and Harry split up for certain.
When sitting down in the theatre for the film festival, Chris Pine sat in between them. When Harry sat down, he turned to Chris and allegedly spat into his lap. Harry and Chris, later, both confirmed that there was no spitting involved, though there was always tension between Harry and Chris. Speaking of tension, Olivia Wilde and Florence Pugh also had lots of conflicts throughout the duration of filming and never really liked each other. Florence is especially mad about how the movie is marketed because it's “hypersexualized.” Florence also dislikes how caught up Olivia was in her romance with her co-star, Harry styles. When the movie got a standing ovation after the festival, actor Nick Kroll and Harry Styles kissed as a sign of celebration. Because of this interaction, more speculations about Harry Styles’ sexuality arose. The singer has been accused of queerbaiting many times, meaning that people think he is trying to act gay for the media but is actually straight. This kiss caused fans to think more about that, which isn't good for Harry’s image.
Florence Pugh wasn’t at the press panel earlier in the day on September 13. When Olivia was asked at the conference why she wasn’t there, she made an excuse about how Florence is filming “Dune 2” and can’t make it until that night for the premiere. But then, Florence posted on social media at the time of the conference with an alcoholic beverage in hand with the caption “Venice !!!” showing that she was in fact, not filming, but in Venice.
The reviews of “Don't Worry Darling” have been negative. People are saying that it’s slow, confusing, boring, and loses its plot. As popular and famous as this movie might get when it comes out, it probably won’t be famous for good reasons.
I got the opportunity to see the movie 5 days before it comes out, on September 19 and I actually loved the movie. I didn't hear one negative comment when leaving the theater. The plot twists in the movie literally got people out of their seats (including me). There was a point in the movie towards the end where mostly everyone got out of their seats and were jumping and screaming. There were so many times the audience gasped, screamed, and laughed. I wouldn’t describe the movie as scary, but as a psychological thriller. It really messes with your mind and makes you think. Overall, the movie was incredible and doesn’t deserve the hate it got by critics. Don't worry, the movie is great, and I totally recommend seeing it.
