The Controversy of Streaming Networks
Bringing in the new year, 2022 has an influx of highly anticipated new shows and new seasons. With streaming services such as Netflix bringing viewers the latest seasons on shows and allowing viewers to catch up and rewatch their favorite classics, 2022 seems like the year for streaming. But recently, viewers have been outraged with the amount of shows being removed from this service, especially by the shows they’re being replaced with.
Due to social media such as Tik Tok and Twitter, there’s been a lot of excitement for the return of people’s favorite childhood shows like The Last Airbender and iCarly as well reality tv shows like The Bachelorette. However during the last months of 2021, Netflix has expressed the cancellation of multiple shows each month. From the months of September to December, the following of last year’s shows have been removed:
Netflix has expressed that most of their reasoning for removing popular titles are due to if, “the rights to the title [are] still available? How popular is it, and how much does it cost? Seasonal and regional factors” licensing agreements, popularity of the show/ movie, and the overall cost of keeping said show/ movie.
In recent news, Netflix has announced shows and movies arriving in January 2022 (both new and returning) which includes titles Monster vs Aliens, Happy Feet, and Road Trip. Even so, with the negative attitudes towards the new Tik Tok reality tv show, The Hype House, airing on Netflix in late January, Netflix streamers are beginning to be displeased by the content Netflix has been releasing.
