College Football is Back in Swing
College Football kicked off two weekends ago where 99 games were played across the United States. Last year the Indiana Hoosiers won the national championship over the University of Miami with quarterback Fernando Mendoza leading the way. This year the Associated Press had the Ohio State Buckeyes ranked No.1 in the preseason rankings. There have already been many upsets, so fans are unsure who will win the national championship this season.
One of the biggest stories so far has been the Texas Longhorns. They defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes, previously ranked number one, 24-23 after a huge 4th quarter comeback fighting back from 20 points down. This result helped Texas move up to No.1 in the AP Top 25 rankings, while Ohio State dropped down to No. 6.
Another few surprising results took place this past Saturday when Oklahoma State defeated Oregon 39-31, causing Oregon to fall from No. 6 to No. 21 in the rankings. Michigan also earned an important win over Oklahoma and moved back into the Top 25. Michigan won the national championship a few seasons ago, so maybe they will go on another run this year.
The South Eastern Conference, or SEC, has also started the year strong, per usual. Texas, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and Alabama are all in the Top 10. With so many highly ranked teams, conference games will have major playoff complications. One huge game is coming up this weekend. No.7 ranked Ole Miss is playing No.8 LSU, in Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford after coaching Ole Miss for six seasons. He took the LSU job before the college football playoff last season resulting in him not being able to coach the team throughout the playoffs. Fans gave him a hostile send off as Kiffin boarded the plane to Batoun Ruge. Lane mentioned the other day, “I guess there's real safety issues and stuff, so there's people that have a plan for that, it is what it is." Ole Miss is looking to prove to Lane Kiffin why he should have stayed in Oxford.
Even though the season just started there have already been many surprises and fun games to look forward to.
