'MJ the Musical' on Broadway

I was part of the New York City Jazz and Dance excursion, where we explored various museums and musical workshops and watched two musicals: Kimberly Akimbo and MJ the Musical. Watching MJ the Musical was thrilling. It went through his life and the challenges of his immense fame including a rare skin disease, plastic surgery, and nose problems that were caused by his father allegedly hitting him in the face.

Kimberly Akimbo and MJ the Musical are both phenomenal musicals, each offering a unique perspective on life and art. Kimberly Akimbo has an emotional and odd take on life's unpredictability, while MJ the Musical, is about his life and the struggles he went through.

We arrived at the Neil Simon Theatre off-Broadway, and I immediately knew it would be an extraordinary musical. The show began with Michael Jackson's "Beat It." It was spectacular. The choreography was sharp, with dancers reenacting Michael Jackson's moves, like the moonwalk, which excited the audience.

The cast was extraordinary, representing the spirit and passion of MJ. They brought emotion to the stage. The actor playing Michael Jackson channeled his energy and vulnerability. The musical went through MJ’s highs and lows throughout his life mainly focusing on how to please his fans while dealing with fame.

The set design was another part of the show with amazing use of lighting. During “Smooth Criminal” the stage was turned into a 1930s nightclub.

The second act went into the complexities of Jackson's life, looking at some of the controversies that shadowed his career. Nevertheless, it maintained a respectful tone, focusing on the impact of his music and the personal cost of his global fame.

After MJ the Musical had ended, we had an opportunity to meet with the cast. We asked questions about being a part of Broadway and how they got this opportunity. We were so grateful to be a part of this.

Walking out of the theater felt draining; not only had we just finished the incredible musical it was also our last night in the city.

Overall, everyone enjoyed the musical. The cast made the musical authentic, and it felt like we were witnessing the story in real life. The cast's performance was very entertaining. It was a very special experience to be a part of this excursion and have an opportunity to see this musical.
