Trunk or Treat: A New Galloway Tradition?
Each year, Galloway students in ML and UL gather around campus to watch EL students parade through the school in their Halloween costumes. This year, with UL on a different campus, some things had to change. The real question: How do we keep this beloved tradition alive?
On October 17th, 2024, Mallory Ward sent an email to the graduating class of ‘25. Its title: First Annual Trunk or Treat. In this email, she stated the following: “I'm reaching out today because Halloween is coming up, and, for those of you who have been here know that, at Galloway, that means the Halloween Parade! While the Halloween Parade is a cherished tradition, we know this year is trickier, and we've been brainstorming how we can allow some of our students to enjoy it. With the help of our friends in EL, we've decided on a Trunk or Treat.”
Taking place on Thursday, October 31st, participants will decorate their cars from 8:15 to 9:20 at the Chastain campus. Then, at 9:30, the fun will commence with the parade and trunk or treating. With only 21 spots, Seniors have been encouraged to form groups to make sure everyone can join in the festivities. For any remaining spots, the form to participate will be opened to Juniors. With candy being given out for each car, the only responsibility for the UL students is to decorate! “We may even turn this into a competition and award the most festive cars,” Mallory says. With kits from Amazon and ideas from Pinterest, this might just be the most festive parade yet.
UL students, especially the Lifers, remember how important and fun The Halloween Parade was for them in EL. So how do they feel about the new tradition? Gavin
Morrissey, Galloway Lifer and current Senior, stated, “That’s cool, maybe I’ll do it,” when he heard of the new Trunk or Treating tradition. As the date draws nearer, Mallory has informed the Seniors that 8 of 21 spots are currently filled, and soon, she will be opening it up to the Juniors.
So far, several fun themes have been suggested, including a fundraising trunk for the Teal Pumpkin Project, a trunk dedicated to Spanish traditions from the Spain Excursion students, and many more. Will the kids find it as thrilling as they have in the past? Will UL students eat the candy or hand it out? Come to the Chastain campus this Thursday to find out!
