9th Grade Student Association: Election Process
The Galloway Student Association is a student-led group who are elected by their peers to represent their grade. Student Association focuses on supporting the UL student body by building community, enhancing school spirit, supporting student voice, and keeping Galloway’s values prominent in all efforts. The leaders meet during lunch on Wednesdays to plan and discuss.
The Student Association is split into three committees: Events, Spirit, and Town Hall. The events committee focuses on planning school events and dances. Spirit committee comes up with new ways to bring Galloway together and enhances previously established traditions with more school spirit. The Town Hall committee organizes Town Hall by setting up announcements, planning the advisory challenge, and celebrating teacher birthdays.
Freshmen have been really excited about the process of Student Association. All freshmen interested in running attended an informational meeting before they started promoting themselves for the election. There were election ballots that were filled out and questions that were answered about the students’ leadership skills. Afterward, students scrambled around campus, putting posters up, asking their friends for their votes, and bribing students for their votes with candy. They were all anxiously waiting for election day when they would finally see the results of their hard work and effort. Overall, they have been excited because they think it will be a great learning experience. Most of the freshmen have not been involved in many school leadership groups, but they are looking forward to the new skills they will develop.
On Election Day, each candidate sat on the edge of the stage in the theater answering questions regarding leadership and community building. They each responded to two random questions, and then they got ten seconds to convince their peers to vote for them. This was an important moment to show their peers how passionate and capable they were. Nia O’Mard (‘27) said, “I am having a lot of fun putting posters up, and I am excited to hopefully be one of the spokespeople for my grade.” Jonathan Livingston (‘27) told his peers to “vote me for clear skin.” After the students voted, they nervously waited until the end of the day to find out if their names ended up on the Student Association board.
The election results have come out, and our new 9th grade Student Association representatives are Isalyn Calleroz White, Hunter Fields, Cokie Jordan, Jonathan Livingston, and me (Ella Marks!). We are all excited about our new responsibilities and are ready to represent our grade.
