The Met Gala 2022
This year’s Met Gala theme of Gilded Glamor was great, but the outfits were far from it. Despite the overall failure of the celebrities, there were a few great looks, and many more laughable ones.
Emma Chamberlain
Emma Chamberlain has transcended from quirky influencer to mainstream celebrity and this look highlights her youthful, yet glamorous persona as of late. The beige crop provided just the right amount of gilded glamor, while retaining a modern flair. Her hair looked stunning with this outfit and the tiara absolutely makes the look. Her jewelry was so cohesive and pulled this top tier outfit together.
9.5/10
Alicia Keys
Alica Keys was not a girl on fire with this tacky look. The dress by itself would have been tolerable but cloak halfway around her body is a major yikes. Even that wasn’t egregious by itself but the rhinestone studded New York skyline imprinted on her robe was not a good choice. She thought it was giving high fashion but it’s really giving grim reaper costume at Party City.
3/10
Janelle Monet
Janelle Monet has served some of the best Met Gala looks in recent years, but she may have outdone herself this year. This sparkly black look with a medium train and a gorgeous headpiece was such a serve. The look was reminiscent of a 1920s flapper dress with a studded twist. This may have been the best look of the night.
10/10
Amy Schumer
Amy Schumer. Oh my goodness. Maybe she drank a little bit too much the night before and blindly grabbed something out of her closet. That would help explain the atrocity of this outfit. The shades add to the hungover aesthetic as well. The trench coat dress was…a choice. For someone who has the privilege of being invited to one of the most prestigious events in pop culture, her lack of style and effort is embarrassing. Shame on you, Amy.
1/10
Billie Eilish
Billie was by far the most on-theme celebrity at the Met. Her corset combined with the earthy beige and greens is breathtaking. Billie perfectly embodied the gilded glamor I was expecting while still keeping her look fresh and new. Her simplistic makeup and matte black hair give the outfit a striking edge. This was an incredible look.
9/10
Anna Wintour
In her old age, Anna may have gotten this year’s theme confused with the 2019 “Camp” theme. The outfit is reminding me of something you would wear to a New Year’s Eve party I wouldn’t go to. The outfit would be closer to acceptable if it weren’t for the hideous, rainbow colored tassels. I don’t know who let her wear that dress out of the house, let alone to the Met Gala. The rose gold shoes are criminally horrific and she should serve jail time for subjecting my eyes to this look.
3.5/10
Evan Mock
I usually despise when men wear suits to the Met, as it feels far too predictable but this was an exception. The ruffled neck adds a clean, subtle touch of glamor straight from the Bridgerton age and the stunning beige color makes this look a jawdropper. His short, pink hair looks so cool and adds a much needed touch of color to his otherwise monochrome look.
8.5/10
Shawn Mendes
Shawn thought he did something noteworthy with this look. He did not, in fact, do anything special. I like Shawn, I think he’s nice but this was a complete miss. He decided to go for a Disney Princess type outfit but it looked…off. Men continue to get praised for doing the absolute bare minimum at the Met Gala and this was no exception. Shawn got lots of praise for this Goodwill Gaston costume, but we deserved better.
