Buffalo Shooting Kills Ten, Injures Three
On May 14, 2022, ten were killed and three people were left wounded in a shooting at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Buffalo, New York. Although an investigation is ongoing, authorities are currently treating the events as a hate crime, as police found a surplus of evidence on the primary suspect, a white man, which suggests that he was committing his actions upon the basis of white supremacist ideologies. Several references to prominent Nazi and White supremacist figures were found on the gun that was used to commit the murders, and authorities found a number of posts that he made on popular blog-sites, 4-Chan and Reddit, in which he described in detail his plans and motives to carry out the murders. Police say that if the suspect had not been apprehended, there is a strong chance he would have tried to carry out even more violence on other predominantly black gathering places, such as elementary schools and churches. The suspect even went as far as to broadcast the killings to Twitch, one of the most popular live streaming services in the world. Despite attempts from the company to remove the graphic video from its website and the internet as a whole, the video has still been redistributed on a multitude of social media platforms.
We give our condolences to the families of those whose lives were lost in this tragic event, and we give our best wishes to the three injured civilians who are still recovering from this tragedy.
