January 6th Capitol Insurrection: One Year Later
One year ago today, on January 6th, 2021, the United States Capitol was attacked by supporters of ex-President Trump in protest of the 2020 election results during a Joint Congress session set to confirm them. A year later, investigators are still working to uncover the total damages resulting from the incident as well as where the responsibility lies. Through intensive court cases over the last 365 days, some evidence has been released.
The following details the results of Capitol Insurrection related court cases as well as the FBI’s investigation:
Over 725 defendants have been arrested for engaging in the violence at the capitol on January 6th. People from all 50 states have been arrested.
Over 225 defendants have been charged with criminal charges for in some way harming officers or Capitol employees, 75 of which have been charged for ownership of a deadly weapon or severe violence against members of the police force. Approximately 140 officers were physically harmed during the insurrection.
Over 275 protestors have been charged with interrupting a Congressional proceeding.
640 protesters have been charged for entering private governmental property (federal buildings), 75 of which charged for weapon ownership within the grounds, 45 of which charged for destroying government property, and 30 charged with stealing for government property.
Charges with conspiracy to interrupt congress, obstruct the police force, and injure an officer have been issued to over 40 defendants.
Around 10 individuals have been arrested under the statute of harming media personnel including journalists, photographers, etc.
165 defendants have pleaded guilty in front of the court for an assortment of federal misdemeanor charges, many of which will face incarceration as punishment. 20 individuals have pleaded guilty to a felony offense, and six have confessed to assaulting a law enforcement officer, all of whom will face financial penalties and a minimum of eight years in prison (20 years for four of the convicts)
Around 70 of the defendants have already completed their cases and received sentences; 31 individuals will receive time in prison, 18 will receive home detention, and the remainder are sentenced to probation.
There are still 350 people believed to have participated directly in the violence of January 6th, 250 of whom have allegedly assaulted members of the police force. Video evidence leaves faces unnamed and more arrests to be made.
