While football is obviously the main event of the Superbowl, there is no doubt that many of the viewers are there to enjoy the overdone and iconic Superbowl commercials. During the 2021 Super Bowl, Mountian Dew released a very interesting commercial used to promote Mountain Dew’s newest flavor, “Major Melon”. The commercial starred John Cena in a hot pink and green convertible driving through a fictional amusement park titled “Major Melon.” The commercial was bright and vibrant, flashing the colors of the new soda bottle, and creating a sea of pink and green. There were even birds flying that had watermelon slices for wings flying around a landscape made of Mountain Dew bottles and ! While the entire commercial was no doubt entertaining and eye-catching, the real excitement came towards the end of the commercial, when Cena announced “Be the first to count and tweet the exact number of Mountain Dew Major Melon bottles shown in this commercial and you could win a million dollars!” Immediately all of Twitter broke loose. Millions of people around the country were tweeting their guesses with the hashtag “ #MTNDEWMAJORMELON.” I even decided to enter the crazed competition. I was allowed 3 guesses and on my third guess, Mountain Dew actually replied to me! They said, “You did it. You counted! Was it correct? Stay tuned to see who wins at counting bottles of #MTNDEWMAJORMELON.” I am still not sure if was a sign that I counted correctly or if they were just trying to keep my hopes up. But either way, I doubt I was even close to winning. On February 10, Mountain Dew sent out another tweet telling the crazed competitors that the winner would soon be announced. Though the competition may have gotten a little too crazy, there is no doubt that Mountain Dew did a wonderful job promoting their new drink. This commercial prompted millions of people across the country to grab the new Dew while reminding them that they wasted 45 minutes of their lives counting Mountain Dew bottles just to lose a competition.
