Eternals Movie Review

Before watching Eternals, I heard some mixed reviews, with many people calling it Marvel’s worst movie yet, and some hailing it as one of their best works. I don’t know much about this movie, but I have watched almost all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, so I know the basic background information. I can thank my sister for that.

In the trailer, they recall the events of both Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. The sudden return of half of the population gave the energy for the “Emergence” to begin. We didn’t get any information about the Emergence, but it probably has to do with the “deviants”. Overall, it seems like it should be a good movie in my opinion. I like watching Marvel movies, even when there’s a lot going on.

I really liked the movie. It wasn’t like other Marvel movies I’ve seen, and it brings a fresh look to the brand while still being connected to its comic-book origins. Gemma Chan as Sersi and Richard Madden as Ikaris star as the main “love interests”, or should I say awkward exes. Sersi loves humans, as she even dates one. While walking down the street, she bumps into a Deviant. She also bumps into her ex, Ikaris. Awkward. There are many levels of inclusivity that haven’t been shown in past Marvel movies, including an openly gay couple, a HoH (hard of hearing) main character, and more. The way this movie was shot was brilliant, having flashbacks to centuries before, incorporating major events in history and the Eternals part in those said events. With effective plot twists and heartbreaking realizations, this movie is exactly what Marvel needed to get the magic back into the brand. My overall rating of this movie is a 7 out of 10.

Incorporating acting, depth of thinking, authenticity, and emotional impact, I made my final rating. It was a bit confusing to connect all of the dots, but when I finally pieced it together, the plot made so much more sense. Depth of thinking was very well done, but the giant web of background information gets twisted when in comparison to the comics. The acting was beautiful and pieced together the story with emotional monologues and cutthroat arguments. This movie is not what most people expected, but I loved it, in spite of its low points.
