Republicans for Biden

On Monday, August 24, the first day of the 2020 Republican National Convention, over two dozen former republican congressmen/women launched a “Republicans For Biden” effort, where they have publicly endorsed Biden and bashed Trump.

The most noteworthy name on this list is Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona. He supported the impeachment trials of President Trump, but never formally endorsed Biden until now. Back when the impeachment inquiries first started, Flake remarked, “you can go elsewhere for a job, but you cannot go elsewhere for a soul,” as he urged his fellow republicans to vote Trump out of office. Flake has gotten lots of support by the other Republican politicians that have chosen to endorse Biden, but the ones who have chosen to endorse Trump have criticized Flake harshly. Steve Guest, a spokesman at the Republican National Convention, suggested that Flake has “abandoned any set of principles he once professed to have in order to embrace Joe Biden, a far-left Democrat.”

A Biden official remarked on the “Republicans For Biden” effort, telling Fox News that “these former members of Congress cited Trump’s corruption, destruction of democracy, blatant disregard for moral decency, and urgent need to get the country back on course as a reason why they support Biden.” One can believe the Biden campaign feels these political figures are backing Biden because of Trump’s inability to run this country in a way that is presidential, and that regardless of whether or not they agree with Biden’s policies, they know that supporting Biden is the only way to get Trump out of office.

Along with these 27 politicians who have added their names to the official list of conservatives who support Biden, many other prominent Republican lawmakers have publicly endorsed Biden as well. Former Ohio governor and candidate for the 2016 Republican nomination John Kasich spoke at the Democratic National Convention, using his speech to appeal to fellow Republicans, and convince them to support Joe Biden in the upcoming election. "I'm sure there are Republicans and independents who couldn't imagine crossing over to support a Democrat. They fear Joe may turn sharp left and leave them behind. I don't believe that because I know the measure of the man. It's reasonable, faithful, respectful, and, you know, no one pushes Joe around," he said. In addition to Kasich, Mitt Romney, another big name in the Republican party, has been an avid Trump hater since 2018. More than 30 former staff members from Romney’s 2012 campaign have created an effort called “Romney 4 Biden,” claiming that “Mitt and Joe share those same essential, presidential traits.”

Needless to say, support for Joe Biden is growing, and some members of the Republican party are urging like minded voters to kick their party’s candidate out of office. While not many of the “Republicans for Biden” have actually said that they support Biden’s agenda, they have made one thing abundantly clear: Trump has got to go.
