Tiffany and Co's New Plans

Charles Lewis Tiffany founded his company, Tiffany and Co., in 1837 in New York City. Throughout the 20th century, the retailer gained popularity worldwide and achieved particular cultural relevance from its role in Truman Capote’s novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The company now employs more than 14,000 people, but it continues to manufacture jewelry, watches, and luxury accessories, selling them in stores across the world. The company relies on over 5,000 experienced artisans to cut diamonds and create jewelry.

Tiffany and Co. revealed renderings of the exterior transformation in August of 2020 for its Fifth Avenue flagship store for the upper area––floors 8,9 and 10. The OMA, Office for Metropolitan Architecture, designed the plans. The project will renovate the office space originally constructed in 1980 into a forum for events, exhibitions, and clientele. A new glass facade will adorn the original limestone of the lower floors of the building. The project began in the spring of 2019 and will likely conclude by the spring of 2021.

Tiffany and Co.’s original flagship store was built in 1940, and its timeless features will continue to greet visitors as they enter the renovated space. The company plans for the mid-20th century architecture of the lower levels to entice visitors into the modernized upper levels, which will be visible from the street. The company also plans to renovate the interior, but it has not yet released designs for that project.
