9 Necessities of Every Hallmark Christmas Movie
1. Small town
EVERY Hallmark movie to ever exists is set in a small town, which is embellished with Christmas decor and a holiday spirit that overtakes all the townspeople. The snowy town surrounds a giant Christmas tree right near the family bakery everyone loves. To top off the jolly vibe each small town provides an extremely goofy name.
2. A different type of white Christmas
Almost every Hallmark movie consists of an all-white cast with the additional person of color, who seems to never be the star but instead fulfills the unfair and unrealistic stereotypical role of comedic relief or sidekick. Most Hallmark movies feature two main characters, one white blonde woman and one white male. The woman is typically a 90’s TV show actor who needs something to do in the acting industry, such as the most popular Candace Cameron Bure, who previously played DJ on Full House, and Lacey Charbat, who played Mean Girls’ iconic Gretchen Wieners. The man, on the other hand, is yes attractive, but nobody knows who it is. They typically have played minor roles in movies you have never heard of.
3. Somebody’s Dead, Always
With any cheesy and sad romantic movie, there must be some family trauma. Typically the mom of the leading actress role has passed when she was young. This not only provides a sad backstory for the woman to tell her love interest when falling in love but a connection to her family who she typically hasn’t seen in years due to some falling out. It brings the family back together just in time to spend the Holiday together.
4. The Big City Girl
The beginning of Every Hallmark movie is a big city entrepreneur woman who is either returning to her hometown for the holidays, typically unwillingly, or she has sent by her boss as a journalist to tell the iconic story of a small-town white Christmas. She shows up in a full business suit and immediately feels out of place surrounded by the ugly Christmas sweaters and the big Santa.
5. Small Town pretty-boy
Yet another Romeo and Juliet story of an unlikely, yet perfect match. To go along with the big-city girl comes the small-town boy who never left the town because it’s where his home is though he wishes for bigger things. He knows everyone in the town and is known as Mr. Nice guy. Everybody loves him. He embodies the Christmas spirit.
6. The Trench Coat
I have, in my years, seen MANY Hallmark movies, and I have yet to see one where the leading actress isn’t wearing either a red or beige trench coat with 2 buttons on each side. This is the signature Hallmark Christmas movie clothing item.
7. Some odd occurrence which makes the two main characters fall in love
Whether one ends up working for another, they are old childhood friends or boyfriend and girlfriend, or they randomly are paired to run a small-town Christmas event, the big-city girl and small-town boy are placed together, and neither is happy about it. The city gal claiming she has more important things to deal with than a stupid holiday and the charming boy who is trying to make her see the joy of Christmas. But eventually, the two fall in deeply love, it is a holiday miracle.
8. 1 Small Difference
Whether it is that the family is royal, the twin sisters have switched places, a huge Christmas ball must be thrown last minute or a family bakery business is in trouble, there is always one tiny aspect that separates one movie from another because without that they would be totally boring.
9. True Love
Here is the epitome of every Hallmark movie. The epic love story of two people who never thought they could fall in love and tried to prevent it, but at the last moment, there is always a true love kiss as the last snow of winter falls and the Christmas bells ring.
