RIP Juice Wrld
Twenty-one-year-old rapper Juice Wrld, whose real name is Jarad Anthony Higgins, tragically died of a seizure on December 8th, 2019. While the circumstances of his death are still under investigation, here's what we do know: Juice collapsed at Midway Airport in Chicago and went into cardiac arrest. The police officers were reportedly tipped off that Higgins had been traveling with drugs, so when his plane landed at the airport, he took all of the drugs that were on him. Anyone who is a fan of his music knows that the rapper has a history of drug addiction as drugs are consistently present in his music. He had a problem specifically with Percocet, one of the drugs he was on when he died, which contains acetaminophen and oxycodone, an opioid. He was administered two doses of Narcan, but unfortunately, he could not be saved, and he died shortly after at the hospital.
The police officers searched his bag and found 70 pounds of marijuana as well as 3 pistols and ammunition, which he illegally possessed.
His tragic death has had a large impact on the rap community. Thirty-three-year-old rapper Drake said “I would like to see all the younger talent live longer and I hate waking up hearing another story filled with blessings was cut short.” His post was likely referring to Lil Peep and XXXTentation who died in 2017 and 2018 respectively due to drugs and violence. Following their deaths, Juice Wrld released an EP dedicated to them titled “Too Soon,” which featured a song called “Legends.” The lyrics of this song read, “They tell me I’ma be a legend/I don’t want that title now/‘Cause all the legends seem to die out,” as well as “What's the 27 Club?/We ain't making it past 21.” Juice died only a few days after his twenty-first birthday.
However, this is not the end of Juice Wrld. He left behind lots of unreleased music which means we will be hearing from him for a while, but the cycle of drugs and violence remains prevalent in the music industry.
Juice Wrld is remembered heavily by those around him, but most importantly, his music will live on forever.
