A Review of the 2018 Emmy Awards

Hosted by Colin Jost and Michael Che, the 70th annual Emmys were last night and wow! Some wins were predictable, such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Other wins, on the other hand were more surprising, like Claire Foy for Lead Actress in a Drama Series for The Crown. She even said in her speech “This wasn’t supposed to happen.” Game of Thrones won big with nine wins, and The Marvelous Mrs. Masiel won big with eight, along with Saturday Night Live. One of the highlights was that a proposal happened! Glenn Weiss, the director of the Oscars, proposed to his girlfriend while accepting the speech for outstanding director for a variety special. The primetime Emmy awards are an annual award show that includes television shows on many different platforms. Netflix had the most nominations - a whopping 112 - while HBO came as a close second with 108. This is the first time in 18 years that HBO didn’t have the lead nominations.

The Primetime Emmys are divided into 27 different categories. Game of Thrones, a popular TV show, had 22 nominations and won nine of them. Although the Emmys are divided into three award shows, my favorite is the Primetime Emmys. It also seems that people agree with me because in 2017 there were 11.38 million views, therefore the Emmys struck an eight year renewal with their networks.

Emmy tickets are not open to the general public, so you can imagine that invations are very exclusive and limited. An Emmy award is a “symbol of peer reginiton.” History has already been made this year because at the Creative Arts Emmys, John Legend won an Emmy for producing best variety special. Legend is a notable winner already because he is the youngest person and the first black man to ever win an Emmy, Oscar, Tony, Grammy (egot).

While the Emmys are normally on a Sunday, this year, to not interfere with Sunday Night Football, they are on a Monday. This is why some are saying that it feels a bit off this year. The uncertainty of the show was resolved in the opening act. The theme song was making a joke on how Hollywood isn’t diverse at all.
