John Kelly to Resign
Adding to the epidemic of resignations that have recently hit the White House is the departure of John Kelly, President Trump’s chief of staff. Though Trump and Kelly’s relationship was tenable in the summer when Trump asked Kelly to remain chief of staff for two more years, a lot can change in a few months. The two dominant politicians have completely ceased all conversation as of recently, and Trump has launched into the process of finding a potential replacement for Kelly. A high profile contender for the coveted job was Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence’s chief of staff. However, he announced that he would be departing from the White House at the end of the year, but will remain working with the Trump campaign, taking himself out of the running to be the President’s chief of staff.
Though the timing of this resignation comes as a shock, it is not quite surprising as Kelly has nearly stepped down or been fired before. However, each time they had a disagreement previously, Trump and Kelly have been able to make amends, but it seems that this time the relationship cannot be salvaged. The pending departure signifies the end of a turbulent time in office for Kelly, who was ironically brought in to produce order in the White House. However, his tenure has been largely spent doing damage control for the president.
Despite the fact that his days began by blocking outsiders from being able to call the White House and holding broad authority over staffing, Kelly will leave the Trump administration on a sour note.
