Music Midtown 2019 Review
Music Midtown, the festival that everyone looks forward to for a year, was this past Saturday, and it did not disappoint. While the lineup was not very promising, and the weather was 86 degrees at the coldest, I went in with an open mind since this was my first Music Midtown. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but I strapped on my fanny pack and tried my best to not be scared by all of the articles, I read about the Music Midtown environment.
Saturday the 14th was the first day. I arrived around 4:30pm, just in time to get through security, get food, and secure our places in the crowd for Quinn XCII, the first performer we saw. The line for security was not very long, which was reassuring; however, the line to get to the bathroom was outrageous, and if you take more than a minute, people begin to kick and knock on your door to tell you to hurry. Heading to the first concert after the not so great bathroom experience was frightening, but we got there as soon as the show started and after pushing through a large crowd to get to the front, I became excited again. Quinn XCII was amazing, and he sang all of my favorite songs like “Straightjacket” and “Another Day in Paradise.”
We left the Quinn XCII concert a few songs before it ended because we wanted to see the first part of Lizzo. Lizzo’s stage presence was amazing, and the crowd copied her enthusiasm. We left Lizzo early because she was performing at the same time as Lil Yachty, so we missed most of her hit songs, but even though I didn’t know all the songs she sang, I had a great time at her show.
Seeing Lil Yachty was the highlight of my Saturday. He performed all of his most popular songs and had a great stage presence. The crowd was electric, and everyone was screaming the lyrics to his songs. Cardi B was the last person I went to see on Saturday. The minute she came out in her sparkly pink jumpsuit, I knew it was going to be a great show, and she did not let me down.
After a night of little sleep, Sunday came. The first artist I saw on Sunday was Dominic Fike. I was not sure what to expect because I did not know his music, but I was pleasantly surprised by what a great time I had at his show. “3 Nights” is one of my new favorite songs, and I had never even heard it before.
Jaden Smith was next, but I only stayed for one song because the crowd was way too packed and it was 90 degrees. That was definitely a low point of my weekend. However, I cheered up when we went to see MØ, who I love. She played “Kamikaze” and “Final Song” which are two of my favorites. My friends and I had a great time and we could tell that she was having a great time on stage performing.
Next was Billie Eilish. I had seen her in concert before, so I know how amazing she is live. I had high hopes for her performance, and while she did great, her microphone was not working properly and because there were so many people there, I could hardly hear her from where I was standing. She also played a lot of her new music, and as a Billie fan from day one, I was hoping to hear more of her old stuff. After Billie, my friends and I sat on the grass for at least an hour waiting for Travis Scott to come out. Let me just say, it was entirely worth the wait.
Travis was easily the best part of my whole weekend. My friends and I got into the front and were right at the barricade, behind only the VIP section. I cherished every second of the Travis Scott concert, as I have been wanting to see him since his album first came out, and his concert lived up to my very high expectations.
Although Music Midtown seemed a bit overwhelming, hot, and crowded at first, I highly recommend going. It is the perfect opportunity to fall in love with new artists, hang out with all of your friends, and finally get to hear that artist that you have been dying to hear. I’m already counting down the days until Music Midtown 2020!
